Flávio Bolsonaro Fled Brazil? Senator Missing After Election Loss

Missed passport deadline

The senator, who has yet to concede defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was ordered by a supreme court justice to hand over his travel document. The ruling cancelling his passport came minutes after the result was announced and related to a criminal case against him.

He was given until 11am on Tuesday morning to surrender the document to the federal police, but did not appear and has not been seen since Monday - fuelling claims that Flávio Bolsonaro fled Brazil after the bolsonaro presidential election loss.

The order came in a case in which federal police are investigating him for possible involvement in a money-laundering scheme worth about £680m ($905m) involving betting companies.

Reports of an escape route

Several outlets have reported on where the senator may have gone, though no immigration record has surfaced.

  • •Infobae reported that on Monday night he fled to Argentina and was expected to board a private jet in Puerto Iguazú bound for the US, but the plane never took off.
  • •Folha de S Paulo reported that allies in the family's inner circle were told he had left for Argentina and intended to travel on to the United States.
  • •The Argentine channel Todo Noticias reported that he crossed the border into Argentina on foot and abandoned the plane plan once news of his movements leaked.

There is no record of him passing through any regular Brazilian immigration checkpoint, and the federal police are now asking Argentine authorities whether there is a record of him entering Argentina.

Family statements and denials

The rumours of the senator having fled stand against his own words a day earlier. In a video posted on Monday about the passport cancellation, Flávio Bolsonaro said: "I never thought about leaving the country."

His brother Eduardo, who lives in self-imposed exile in the US, had said in an interview last Friday that Flávio should leave Brazil if he lost the election.

A family in legal trouble

The disappearance of the defeated candidate adds to a series of legal troubles surrounding the patriarch and his sons.

  • •Jair Bolsonaro is under house arrest for attempting a coup.
  • •Eduardo Bolsonaro, in the US, has an outstanding arrest warrant in Brazil after being sentenced to four years in prison for lobbying Donald Trump to impose sanctions on the justices hearing his father's trial.
  • •Flávio himself faces longstanding criminal allegations, including suspicions that he embezzled part of his staff's salaries, alongside more recent accusations.

The federal police inquiry into whether Argentina holds any entry record for the senator continues, and he has yet to concede defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
