Starlink Ukraine Restrictions: Overnight SpaceX Speed Limit Disrupted Military Missions

An unannounced speed limit

Sergiy Beskrestnov, technology adviser to Ukraine's president, said overnight SpaceX introduced a speed limit for Starlink terminals while they are in motion, and that Kyiv received no advance notice of the change. He said the unannounced restriction hit military operations and connected the move to the wider political situation.

"Tonight SpaceX introduced a speed limit for the Starlink terminals in motion"
"Our defence forces were not warned about this restriction, which led to the disruption of a number of missions"

How Ukraine uses Starlink

Starlink, the satellite internet service run by Elon Musk's SpaceX, provides battlefield communications for Ukraine, including as an alternative to radio control for its drones.

The impact was not uniform across the front. Ukraine's 7th Rapid Reaction Corps, deployed in the southeast, reported that some units had to cancel missions after connections dropped during drone flights.

"during flights, the connection could drop for 10–20 seconds at speeds of just 110–120km/h"

Logistics hit and political backdrop

A senior Ukrainian official told AFP the disruption "severely restricts logistics, first and foremost", and said restrictions were reported at the same time as a morning Russian ballistic attack.

US President Donald Trump declared an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in a social media post on Sunday, writing that "Both parties have agreed", and is moving to ease sanctions on Russian diesel. Ukraine, for its part, reported that a Russian missile struck a power plant in Kyiv on Tuesday evening, and Russia launched targeted strikes on energy infrastructure.

The search for an alternative

President Volodymyr Zelensky said in August that Ukraine was working with an unidentified European country to develop a replacement for Starlink. For his part, Musk has shifted his stance on Ukraine several times since Russia's invasion began in 2022. earlier coverage
