The ilhan omar raid and the president's rally attack landed within hours of each other. On Monday, US authorities searched the Minnesota congresswoman's Washington home in what the Justice Department described as part of an ongoing investigation. That same night, Trump derided her and her birth country from a stage in Ohio, while his supporters chanted for her deportation.
Raid on Omar's Washington home
The Justice Department said US authorities carried out a predawn raid of Omar's home in Washington, DC, on Monday as part of an ongoing investigation. A person familiar with the investigation said the probe relates to alleged immigration fraud, concerning paperwork filed by Omar's late father when she was a child.
Omar, the Somali-born lawmaker and an outspoken critic of the president, did not dispute that the search took place. Instead, she framed it as the newest step in a decade-long effort against her.
Trump's rally attacks in Ohio
Trump appeared in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday night at a rally meant to boost senator Jon Husted's reelection campaign, where he attacked two groups of immigrants. He took aim at Omar directly, saying of her birth country: 'She comes from one of the worst countries anywhere on the planet. What a mess they have done - Somalia.'
He also linked Minnesota's Somali immigrant population to Haitians in Springfield, Ohio. Two years earlier, Trump had falsely accused Haitians of eating pets during a presidential debate; on Monday he said 'I was right'. He boasted that Haitians were being driven out of the country by his administration's policies.
Urging the crowd to vote Republican so Ohio would not be 'plundered, ransacked and destroyed' like Minnesota, Trump drew chants of 'Deport, deport' from the Republican supporters in attendance.
Omar and House Democrats respond
Omar rejected the attack and the search in a statement on social media.
'For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns.'
She wrote that the raid was 'the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation' and added that she will 'not be silenced'. She characterized the search of her Washington home as part of Trump's 'intimidation' campaign, adding that she was being targeted as one of his 'political enemies'.
US House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and other House Democratic leaders issued a joint statement calling the raid 'deeply disturbing and raises serious questions' about the weaponization of the federal government.
