'Freeze and stop': Zelensky's ceasefire call
President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that the front line in Russia's war against Ukraine should be frozen along current lines as a first move toward peace talks, framing the halt itself as a ceasefire. He set out the zelensky freeze front line proposal in an interview on "Fox and Friends", when asked whether he would accept a peace deal that freezes the front.
"Right now we have to freeze, and I think this is (the) real way to end this war. We call it ceasefire... freeze and stop."
Peace talks 'not without us'
Any negotiations, he said, must involve Ukraine itself, however the format is arranged. "I always said that we are open to negotiate in any format, any topics. But don't speak about us without us, please."
He also named the conditions a settlement would need: security guarantees from partners, including the United States and European allies. Ukrainians, he said, fear "that occupation will come back, aggression will come back, killings will come back."
Witkoff meets Putin as diesel deal announced
The proposal landed alongside parallel diplomacy. US special envoy Steve Witkoff met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saint Petersburg for talks on ending the war, and as he arrived Russia made two announcements:
- •It would soon begin diesel shipments to the United States under a deal with President Donald Trump.
- •It had freed a US citizen held by Moscow since the start of the war.
Satellite dispute with Washington
Zelensky spoke days after Kyiv accused Washington of deliberately slowing speeds on the SpaceX-operated Starshield system, which Ukraine relies on for battlefield communications. He said both Starshield and the parallel Starlink civilian service are "still limited".
"But Secretary (of State Marco Rubio) told me that he will work with his team on this to unblock this," Zelensky said of the satellite services.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that SpaceX owner Elon Musk had ordered the reduction in Starshield services. Musk had previously said any limits on the system would have come from Trump - a charge the US president denied.
