Ukraine air raid alert app hacked, air force warns alerts unreliable

Air force suspects hostile interference

On Sunday the air force announced that the Air Alarm application had, in its assessment, probably come under hostile interference, and cautioned that the threat levels shown on it no longer reflected what was actually happening. Air force spokesperson Yuriy Ignat, asked by AFP whether the app had been hacked, answered: "Yes, it has been."

Timing after the Kherson truce

The announcement landed only minutes after a local ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv in the eastern Kherson region expired. That truce, in place since Tuesday, had been the longest of the war so far.

What the app does and who is blamed

The application serves all of Ukraine, sending instant warnings of Russian air strikes. In a ballistic missile attack, people may get no more than a few minutes to reach shelter, which is why reliable alerts matter.

  • •SPRAVDI, Ukraine's Centre for Strategic Communications, attributed the hack to Russia in a post on X.
  • •Ukraine's Centre for Countering Disinformation issued a statement warning that the app was displaying false threat information.

Reassurances and what still works

The air force moved to calm fears, saying there was no radiation threat and directing people to follow its channel for updates. Kyiv city authorities added that a separate app covering the capital alone was still working normally.
