Jordan Bardella Faces Anti-Semitic Comments Cover-Up Claims Over Deleted Facebook Data

Data deleted days after the first articles

Le Canard enchaîné reported on Friday that data from a Facebook account used by Jordan Bardella in his early activist years was wiped just days after Mediapart first published the anti-Semitic comments allegations. According to the satirical weekly, which obtained "extracts of private conversations", everything on the account was removed between 28 September and 2 October.

The account dated from Bardella's early years with the Front National, the National Rally's former name.

The allegations and Bardella's denials

Mediapart broke the story the previous week, claiming Bardella wrote the comments in a chat when he was a teenager in 2013. Among the alleged messages, the investigative site quoted the line: "The Jew has to dominate other peoples, crush them, and rob them; a Zionist is necessarily a Jew, and fundamentally so."

  • •Mediapart later posted screenshots of messages allegedly written by Bardella on Facebook Messenger.
  • •On Friday, Mediapart said it had identified similarities between messages from Bardella's personal Facebook account and posts on the National Rally leader's official X account.
  • •Bardella denies making the alleged youthful writings, and the party categorically rejected the claims.

The new report landed just days after Bardella said he had "no Facebook account" and had not used the platform "for a very long time".

Entourage denies and plans defamation complaint

Bardella's entourage rejected the cover-up allegations outright, saying he had "never logged into any Facebook account nor deleted any messages", and said a defamation complaint would be filed "in the coming hours".

Bardella himself accused his opponents of waging a "total war" to derail the National Rally's rise to the presidency, and vowed to take Mediapart to court over what he called fakes.

Le Pen stands by her ally

Marine Le Pen, the presidential frontrunner, said she has "complete confidence" in Bardella, who is seen as a likely prime minister should she win next year's presidential election.

For now, the next step named by Bardella's camp is the defamation complaint, promised within hours.
