Recent gaza devastation google maps imagery captured in June 2026 reveals the extensive ruin across the territory in the wake of the October 2025 ceasefire. The satellite photographs illustrate ongoing damage to residential, commercial, religious, and infrastructural locations.
Satellite imagery details widespread ruin
The updated visuals highlight severe destruction in northern municipalities like Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun. Prominent districts within Gaza City, including Shuja’iya and Jabaliya, appear entirely unlivable. In the south, the images show a vast cleared zone along the Egyptian border.
Rafah is depicted as almost completely leveled, while Tel al-Sultan is shown as entirely demolished. Additionally, the Istiqlal mosque in Khan Younis is visible as destroyed.
Displacement and infrastructure damage
Over 2.1 million displaced individuals currently reside in temporary accommodations and tents throughout the territory. Extensive tent encampments are visible along the coastline, with some situated just meters from the water. Gaza's primary port is severely damaged, lacks fishing vessels, and is surrounded by improvised housing. Vacant areas within Gaza City are filled with temporary shelters and makeshift structures.
- •Unrwa reports that approximately 82 percent of the territory's structures sustained damage.
- •This equates to around 200,000 buildings.
- •Unrwa indicates that roughly two-thirds of those damaged buildings were completely destroyed.
Debris volume and conflict background
Jaco Cilliers, the UN Development Programme’s special representative in Palestine, noted that human remains trapped under the debris present a critical humanitarian issue. He stated the total debris volume is estimated at 61 million tonnes. Jaco Cilliers added this debris volume is roughly 20 times the global total from all wars in the preceding 18 years.
The hostilities commenced following a Hamas surprise incursion into Israel in October 2023. During the October 2023 attack, Hamas fighters killed approximately 1,200 individuals, primarily civilians, and captured 251 hostages. The war has resulted in the deaths of over 74,000 Palestinians, predominantly civilians. A United Nations evaluation calculated a 9 percent rise in demolished buildings since the October 2025 truce.
