Flydubai suspended all flights to and from Israel following a flydubai flight incident where a pilot was stabbed and passengers intervened to stop the aircraft. The airline urged parties to refrain from premature speculation while authorities gather the facts.
Passengers intervene in cockpit
The sequence of events started when one aviator stabbed his colleague on the flight deck in an apparent attempt to take control of the aircraft. More than 170 individuals were aboard the journey between Dubai and Tel Aviv, with the majority of passengers from Israel.
Travelers stormed the front cabin and fought the alleged assailant for the yoke during a steep drop, ultimately steadying the jet for a forced landing in Saudi Arabia.
A video released by the prime minister's office featured Yaniv Hayoun, who works as a plumber, explaining that travelers heard shouts and noticed cabin pressure shifts prior to breaching the flight deck.
Hayoun informed Benjamin Netanyahu that he restrained the assailant at the control panel with a chokehold and pulled him away.
I grabbed the attacker, put him in a chokehold, and dragged him out first
The plumber noted that he manipulated the steering mechanisms based on television observations until the rest of the cabin crew assumed command.
The wounded aviator was named as Captain Smit Machchhar, a citizen of India, who initiated the distress signal and unlocked the cabin door to allow entry.
Suspect questioned as flights halt
Saudi officials were interrogating the accused aviator, and Netanyahu anticipated a swift handover to the United Arab Emirates. Following a conversation with the Emirati president, it was confirmed that Israeli representatives would join the questioning process.
- •Unnamed sources from Israel informed the press that the suspect hailed from Oman, a claim left unaddressed by both Omani and Emirati representatives.
- •Flydubai suspended its flights to and from Israel pending the investigation.
Leaders respond to attempted attack
Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, remarked that assigning ultimate blame for the apparent plot to down the inbound aircraft is currently premature.
Danny Danon, the Israeli envoy to the United Nations, expressed absolute certainty that a radical lone actor orchestrated the terrorism incident.
He further noted that although no state or group can be connected to the act yet, the goal to destroy the jet remains undeniable.
The Israeli leader assured that investigators will get to the root of the attacker and determine if he had accomplices.
American President Donald Trump informed journalists on Wednesday night that details were still fuzzy following his discussion with Netanyahu.
Trump hypothesized that the second-in-command could have been an extremist or simply behaving crazily during the stabbing.
Diplomats worldwide received a briefing from the Israeli foreign ministry, which framed the episode as an attempted terrorist attack against Israelis, the United Arab Emirates, and the Abraham Accords.
Global leaders, including Netanyahu, commended the courageous actions of the cabin staff and travelers on Wednesday.
Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, hailed Captain Machchhar as a heroic figure via a social media post early Thursday.
Modi highlighted that the wounded aviator displayed extraordinary bravery and a steadfast commitment to shielding others despite his severe wounds.
He concluded that this bravery prevented a massive disaster and preserved hundreds of lives.
Machchhar, originally from Mumbai, is currently undergoing medical care at a medical facility in Tabuk, located in the north-western region of Saudi Arabia.
The suspect remains in Saudi custody pending an expected transfer to the United Arab Emirates.
