How the name will be revealed

The identity of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner stays sealed until the moment of the announcement. Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes will appear before the cameras at 10am UK time (11am CEST) on Friday, 9 October 2026, to give the name during a Europe Live broadcast by Jakub Krupa. The secrecy is deliberate: apart from a handful of members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, no one knows who has won.

Who the favourites are

Several names have circulated in the run-up to the announcement. Mykola Kuleba and Save Ukraine, who work on rescuing Ukrainian children abducted by Russia during the war, have long been counted among the favourites for the 2026 prize. Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms also feature among the leading contenders. In the hours before the announcement, Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Alexei Navalny, rose to the top of some popular prediction websites.

Donald Trump has hoped to win the 2026 prize, but he is considered very unlikely to take it, again.

Last year's laureate

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado, honoured for her dogged struggle to rescue the South American country from its fate as what the committee called a brutal, authoritarian state. She later presented her award to Donald Trump, meeting him at the White House nearly a fortnight after he ordered the abduction of Venezuela's president, Nicolás Maduro.

Prize money and the rules behind it

The 2026 prize money stands at 12 million Swedish kronor, about €1.1m or £910,000. The arrangements trace back to Alfred Nobel's 1895 will, in which the Swedish chemist and inventor directed that the interest on his capital be distributed annually as prizes to those who conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.

The will sets out:

  • •The interest is divided into five equal parts, covering physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace.
  • •The peace prize is awarded by a committee of five persons selected by the Norwegian Storting.

On who may receive the award, Nobel wrote:

no consideration be given to nationality, but that the prize be awarded to the worthiest person, whether or not they are Scandinavian.

As the broadcast notes, this year's announcement comes 125 years after Nobel set out those terms. The name of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner will be read out by Jørgen Watne Frydnes at 10am UK time on 9 October 2026.
