Walter Koenig dies: Star Trek's Chekov actor was 90
Walter Koenig dies at age 90. The actor who played Pavel Chekov across the Star Trek franchise passed away at home, his representative confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter.

A death at home in North Hollywood
Walter Koenig died at his home in north Hollywood, surrounded by his daughter and niece, according to a Facebook post by Zachery McGinnis, founder of Galactic Productions, the appearance agency that represented him. His death was attributed to old age, and no other details were provided. Jesse Thorn, host of NPR's Bullseye, also confirmed the death on Bluesky, citing his friend Danielle Koenig, the actor's daughter.
Tributes from the Star Trek family
McGinnis wrote that Koenig's talent, warmth and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans worldwide, and that he understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it, sharing kindness and wit through countless convention appearances.
Thank you, Walter, for the memories, the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before.
That is how McGinnis's post ended.
"My heart is heavy," Koenig's Star Trek costar George Takei wrote on Facebook on Monday, recalling that he first met Koenig in the 1960s on the bridge of the Enterprise. Koenig had served as Takei's best man at his 2008 wedding; the two had been friends for six decades. Takei called him a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man and a loyal friend who was more than Chekov, closing with "Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course."
Thorn wrote that the very sincere love those Star Trek cast members had for each other was clear in their deep friendship, calling it a gift.
From sentry role to Chekov
Born in Chicago and raised in Manhattan as the child of Lithuanian immigrants, Koenig began acting in 1962 with an uncredited role as a sentry in Combat!. His time as Chekov stretched from the original series to his final reprise:
- •He joined Star Trek at the start of the second season, appearing in 36 of the 50 episodes aired between 1967 and 1969.
- •He played Chekov in the first seven Paramount Star Trek movies released between 1979 and 1991, and in the two-part crowdsourced Renegades series that debuted online in 2017.
- •He most recently reprised the voice of Chekov in a 2023 episode of the animated series Star Trek: Picard.
Beyond the Enterprise
Koenig also worked behind the camera, writing episodes for series including The Powers of Matthew Star, Family, Land of the Lost and The Incredible Hulk. He wrote, produced and starred in the 2010 sci-fi film InAlienable, starring Richard Hatch.
He was married to actor Judy Levitt from 1965 until her death in December 2022 at age 83; the couple appeared together in three Star Trek movies and in the sci-fi series Babylon 5, which ran from 1994 to 1998. Their son Andrew, who played Richard "Boner" Stabone on the ABC sitcom Growing Pains, died in 2010 at age 41. Koenig is survived by his daughter, the actor and screenwriter Danielle Koenig.
