Volodymyr Zelensky voiced his personal hurt at Donald Trump's decision to make a diesel deal with the Kremlin ahead of the US mid-term elections. At the same time, Indian authorities rounded up thousands of Gen Z protesters from the Cockroach movement, detaining them in makeshift detention centres. Both stories featured on France 24's 'The World This Week' issued on 16 October 2026.
Zelensky's Response to the Diesel Deal
Zelensky did not hide his anger at the agreement, which Trump struck with the Kremlin before the US mid-term elections. He called the deal 'weak' and suggested Trump had chosen, 'the other side'.
'the other side'
That was Zelensky's characterisation of the agreement, as heard on the programme. Trump, for his part, made clear he wants Zelensky replaced and warned him against striking Russian refineries.
The Energy Ceasefire That Went Nowhere
Earlier, Trump announced an energy ceasefire, declaring it to have been agreed by both sides, but it went nowhere. In its aftermath, Zelensky continued to search for solidarity and a solution in Europe.
Delhi's Detentions and the Cockroach Movement
In India, the crackdown targeted the movement ahead of a planned protest.
- •Thousands of Gen Z protesters from the Cockroach movement were rounded up and detained in sports stadiums and community halls turned into makeshift detention centres.
- •The movement's founder, Abhijeet Dipke, was arrested on arrival in India.
- •A mass demonstration over alleged voter fraud was effectively crushed before it could begin.
- •Dipke was detained again on the day of the report.
Defence of the Measures and UN Concern
Narendra Modi's government said the measures were necessary to protect civilians in the capital. The UN Human Rights Office responded by urging Indian authorities to respect the right to peaceful assembly.
