The announcement
Neil Bush crosses party lines in the Texas Senate race: in a Facebook post published on Tuesday, he said he chose to vote early for James Talarico, the Democratic candidate, over Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general and Republican nominee. Bush said he was deeply troubled by Paxton's conduct and enormously impressed by Talarico's principles.
"Today, I voted against a style of politics that I believe has damaged our country."
Why Paxton gave him pause
Bush, 71, set out specific reasons for his unease with Paxton. He wrote that he was particularly troubled by Paxton's decision to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election in other states, a move made to help Donald Trump remain in power.
His other concerns were:
- •Paxton's 2023 impeachment by the Texas state legislature and subsequent acquittal
- •Paxton's loyalty to Trump
- •A style of politics he believes has damaged the country
What he said about Talarico
Bush described Talarico, a progressive Democrat known for faith-based messaging, as "a principled, pragmatic leader" with a willingness to listen to those with whom he disagrees. He wrote that character matters more than party affiliation, and that democracy depends on leaders who respect institutions, tell the truth and accept accountability.
Talarico's faith, Bush added, appears to be a deeply rooted source of humility, compassion and conviction rather than a political weapon.
The stakes in the race
The announcement lands two weeks before the midterms, with Democrats and Republicans competing for the Texas Senate seat. No Democrat has secured the seat since the 1980s, and Talarico is the party's hope to end that drought.
Bush's statement reflects the views of a moderate Republican faction that often disagrees with Donald Trump while holding traditional conservative views.
