Fifa council tells Gianni Infantino to scrap or depoliticise the Fifa peace prize after Trump award

Gianni Infantino faced open resistance from his own council on Thursday over the future of the Fifa peace prize, with members demanding the award be abolished or depoliticised following Donald Trump's reception of it.
What the council demanded
Infantino was told at the Thursday meeting of the Fifa council to make major changes to the controversial award or scrap it entirely. Opinion among members split two ways:
- •several council members demanded the award be abolished
- •others called for the prize to be depoliticised
Infantino announced at the start of the meeting that the peace prize had been handed to the social responsibility committee. Council members returned to the subject later in a series of questions about possible conflicts of interest at Fifa.
Why the Trump award tainted the prize
Many council members regard the peace prize in its current form as tainted by its association with Trump. Some also fear the US president could object and create a diplomatic storm if he does not like the identity of its next recipient.
There is a statutory problem too: article two of Fifa's statutes prohibits any political or governmental interference in football, and honouring Trump over that provision triggered backlash from members. As a result, Trump is likely to end up as the only political leader awarded the Fifa peace prize.
How Trump came to receive the prize
Fifa announced the prize's creation last November, stipulating it would reward individuals who have taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and by doing so have united people across the world. Trump received the award at the men's World Cup draw in Washington last December, with Infantino presenting the US president with a golden trophy, a medal and a certificate. The process behind his selection has never been made public.
What happens next
The 22-person football social responsibility committee is dominated by representatives from countries loyal to Infantino, and abolition may be avoided on the grounds it would represent a humiliation for the Fifa president, though change is widely accepted as required. Among members, the most likely outcome discussed is reinventing the prize.
an award for an individual within football who has delivered exceptional work promoting social harmony and responsibility
That version, described by an unnamed council member, would come with a ban on awarding it to a politician. The committee is expected to set strict parameters for any surviving award, and to provide details of a nomination and selection procedure. Its recommendation is due before the next council meeting in Doha on 16 December.
