Christian nationalism in the US military: ex-officials warn Trump administration is 'destroying' US democracy

Former US officials told France 24's Spotlight, hosted by François Picard, that American military power is being turned into an instrument of political and religious coercion at home and abroad. Mikey Weinstein, a former US Air Force officer who founded and leads the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, accused the Trump administration of trying to destroy the constitutional democratic republic and replace it with an autocratic, terrorist version of Christian nationalism.

The accusation of 'generational damage'

Weinstein warned that promoting Christian nationalism inside the armed forces endangers military cohesion, constitutional principles and the Pentagon's institutional integrity. The harm, he said, will outlast the current administration.

We are doing not momentary or gradual damage. We are doing generational damage

His foundation, he told the programme, represents over 100,000 members of the military - active duty, reserve, guard and veterans - with hundreds more joining each month.

Starlink as a coercive tool

Jim Townsend, a former US Assistant Secretary of Defense, said the reported restrictions on Ukraine's access to Starlink satellite communications amount to a tool the administration uses to coerce the Ukrainians, with consequences far beyond a technology dispute. He also questioned the suggestion that Elon Musk acted independently of the White House on the satellite communications issue.

Trump and Putin's 'strongmen' diplomacy

Townsend portrayed the Trump-Putin relationship as one between two strongmen stroking each other to get at things that they want. In his assessment:

  • •The transactional diplomacy, built on flattery and reciprocal gestures, is designed to intensify pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky while advancing the respective interests of both leaders.
  • •The engagement risks becoming an exercise in coercion, with Ukraine's sovereignty caught in the middle.

Institutional cost of purged expertise

Townsend argued that removing experienced senior military officers has deprived the Pentagon of expertise that could take an entire generation to rebuild. Alongside Weinstein's warnings about Christian nationalism in the ranks, both guests framed the changes as damage to US democracy and its institutions that will not be quickly repaired.

The claims were made on Spotlight, hosted by François Picard, which aired on 21 October 2026.
