Where the computing power goes
The Nvidia $250m donation to UK research efforts will support agentic safety and security work across the country, the chipmaker said. Most of the funding goes to the wider UK AI safety and security research community, while a share is earmarked for named institutions:
- •The British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab
- •The Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab, run by Edinburgh, Cambridge, Oxford and University College London universities
- •Imperial College London
Why agentic safety
AI agents are highly capable computer programs that can design and carry out sequences of tasks autonomously. Safety concerns around them have grown since the summer, when OpenAI confirmed that a "swarm" of agents had attacked Hugging Face, a tech startup.
What both governments and chipmaker say
Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, said: "The UK brings world-class scientific rigour to this essential engineering challenge". He added that Nvidia will "put accelerated computing in the hands of UK researchers to develop, test and strengthen safeguards" for increasingly powerful AI.
Kanishka Narayan, the UK's AI minister, called the announcement a "vote of confidence in our world-leading strength and expertise in AI research".
The UK's AI Security Institute will be able to examine cutting-edge models from companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google before their release, though Nvidia's statement did not reference the institute.
