Early stages and casting
A musical based on Amy Winehouse is in development for London's West End, according to Variety. The project is still in its early stages, though casting is reported to be under way. Catherine Schreiber, a Tony award-winning producer whose credits include Cabaret and Rent, is attached to the show.
Mitch Winehouse's involvement
Mitch Winehouse, the late musician's father, is said to be involved with the show, which suggests it will probably feature her best-loved songs. He spoke about the idea in a 2017 interview, saying a musical celebrating Amy's life and music was being talked about for the near future and that he was happy for it to go ahead. He also indicated at the time that it would be for the West End and should remember her as more than her struggles.
We want to do something that remembers Amy for what she was
Winehouse died in 2011, aged 27, and her story has since drawn attention on screen: Asif Kapadia's 2015 documentary about the singer won the best documentary Oscar.
A Back to Black anniversary year
The news lands in the week that marked the 20th anniversary of her landmark album Back to Black, celebrated with a tribute concert at London's Roundhouse. The lineup included several well-known voices from British music:
- •Jorja Smith
- •Mark Ronson
- •Lianne La Havas
- •Corinne Bailey Rae
The anniversary continues on 23 October, when an expanded reissue of Back to Black will be released. It will include four unreleased demos, B-sides and a live album recorded at Amsterdam's Paradiso in 2007.
